The body of Christ

Daily reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13
Monday May 16, 2016

Focus passage: Christ is just like a human body – a body is a unit and has many parts; and all the parts of the body are one body, even though there are many. 1 Corinthians 12:12

It is here that we get the term “the body of Christ.”  Paul compares the variety of ministries that God calls us to and uses the image of the body to ground us in his illustration.
What we hear through this passage is that while we may all have different abilities and gifts it is the same Spirit that gives them to us.  No one gift is better than the other, all are necessary for the function of the church.  Just like with a body, you cannot say that one part is more superior or can function without the other parts.

Just like the human body is interdependent and organic so is the church.  The Spirit enhances the church by gifting each member with unique abilities.

Prayer: Come Holy Spirit come, move in and among my community of faith, stir us and awaken us to Your call in our community today.  Amen.
