Moving forward

Daily reading: Acts 1:1-14
Thursday April 7, 2016

Focus passage: While they were eating together, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised.  He said, “This is what you heard from me:  John baptized with water, but in only a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:4-5

It was one thing to follow Jesus around and see him do all of these amazing things, transforming people and their communities,  speaking life into dead spaces, healing and mending places that had been fragmented and broken. But now the reality began to sink in with his death, and once again with his ascension.

Reality sinks in when we being to do the ministry that God has called us to, when we move from thinking about it into living it.  And while the disciples wanted to hold onto the risen Lord, they had to let go and embrace the gift of the Holy Spirit that would lead them forward.
Rather than hope for what had been, what had become comfortable and normal, they had to be open to God leading them forward into what will be.  And we all do, and it is hard.  God does not call us into the past, God calls us to live today and to live into the future promises.

Prayer: God of the resurrected Christ, breathe new life into the dead spaces of my world.  Amen.
