Daily reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
Sunday April 24, 2016

Focus passage: Now I encourage you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: agree with each other and don’t be divided into rival groups.  Instead be restored with the same mind and the same purpose. 1 Corinthians 1:10

We often join groups or congregations with a Pollyanna sort of attitude, rarely do we join something hoping to engage in a fight, unless of course we are joining Fight Club, which we aren’t allowed to speak of.

After the newness wears off, though we being to realize that, as with any group, there will be bumps in the road, we will include those that are so different than we are that it really causes us to practice the spiritual gifts of patience, compassionate listening and self-control, and inevitably there will be a clash of opinions.  We learn quickly the rules of the road and at times might reach our limits and desire to follow them.

Prayer: God in the places in the world where I find division help me to be a bridge builder, in the places in my life where I find division help me to see the fundamentals of unity and allow the things that are not essential to fall away. Amen.
