Taking up our cross

Daily reading: Mark 8:27-9:13
Tuesday February 9, 2016

Focus passage: After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.  All who want to save their lives will lose them.  But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them.” Mark 8:34-35

Jesus asks us to take up our cross and follow him.  He is teaching us that only when we give our life away for the sake of others, do we fully experience living.

Jesus teaches us, just as he did with the disciples, when he sent them out without bags, or money, or extra clothes, that the things we cannot hold onto in life are the very things we offer to others.

We are to bring with us into every situation love and compassion, forgiveness and kindness.  We are to meet people where they are, so we can journey with them, because in finding them we find ourselves.  We find ways to help mend someone else and in the process find that we are mended too.
We find that when we give of ourselves we are fuller.

Prayer:  Gracious God help me to experience the presence of Christ in this moment and in every moment today.  Open my eyes and my ears to what is happening around me.  Amen.
