A New Thing

Daily reading: Mark 2:1-22
Thursday January 21, 2016

Focus passage: No one pours new wine into old leather wineskins; otherwise, the wine would burst and the wineskins and the wine would be lost and the wineskins destroyed.  But new wine is for new wineskins.” Mark 2:22

Mark 1:15 is a key passage in Mark’s gospel.  It has Jesus saying “Now is the time!  Here comes God’s kingdom!  Change your hearts and lives, and trust in the good news!”  We see then this immediate enacted of his words through Jesus’ words and actions.  He is on the move healing and teaching.  Questions of course emerge from the religious insiders as we would expect.  They wonder why he is eating with tax collectors and they also wonder why his disciples are not fasting like they do or like John’s followers do.

Jesus explains that they are not fasting because they are up to something new in the world. As if to echo “Now is the time!  Here comes God’s kingdom!  Change your hearts and lives, and trust in the good news!”

The freedom we are offered through the gospel message requires that we live our lives in a new way.  If we try and put the gospel in old wine skins they will burst, a new way of living is required.

We are invited then to embody and embrace radical welcome, unconditional love, limitless forgiveness, amazing grace and expansive mercy in our community:  Which will mean that we react and move forward in a different way than before.

Prayer: Help me to mend what is broken in the world.  Amen.
