Daily reading: 1 Kings 18:1-15
Background passage: 1 Kings 18:20-39
Thursday November 12, 2015
Focus passage: After many days, the LORD’s word came to Elijah (it was the third year of the drought): Go! Appear before Ahab. I will then send rain on the earth. 1 Kings 18:1
Before the amazing story of a show down at high noon with Elijah against 450 prophets of Baal, another sort of show down happens. King Ahab has not even a divided heart, but is simply outright worshiping the god Baal instead of the one true God YHWH.
And so in a remarkable way, God responds to the king’s unfaithfulness by proving that Baal is just an idol. Baal can’t speak, or act, or hear, or respond. God does this by causing a drought to come to the land and while Ahab is praying to Baal the god of thunderstorms not a drop of water falls from the sky. For three years.
God is proving to King Ahab that Baal isn’t going to come through for him. Baal isn’t going to respond to his prayers, because he is an idol.
Idols can be everywhere in our life. We can turn our success or our career into an idol. We can turn our traditions into an idol. We can turn our self image into an idol.
The reality is that only God is life giving.
Prayer: God I seek you today. Help me in the trials of my day and let me feel your presence in the joys of my day. Amen.
