The fruit of the Spirit is Goodness

Daily reading: Galatians 5:22-24
July 12, 2015

Focus scriptures: "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12

Jesus sat across from the collection box for the temple treasury and observed how the crowd gave their money.  Many rich people were throwing in lots of money.  One poor widow came forward and put in two small copper coins worth a penny.  Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than everyone who’s been putting money in the treasury.  All of them are giving out of their spare change.  But she from her hopeless poverty has given everything she had, even what she needed to live on.  Mark 12:41-44

Goodness is grounded in giving from our heart.  It isn’t very challenging to give away what we don’t need or no longer want.  It takes a good heart to give when we see need and give even when we are in need.
Goodness is grounded in sharing what you have been blessed with so that you are able to bless someone else.  It challenges us to make hard choices that can ultimately form our character.

Look for opportunities today to exhibit the spiritual gift of goodness.

Prayer: God I pray for goodness to wash over me today and to influence the decisions I make.  May my eyes be open to the needs around me.  Amen.
