Wrestling with God

Daily reading: Genesis 32:22-32

Focus scripture: But Jacob stayed apart by himself, and a man wrestled with him until dawn broke.  Genesis 32:24

Our faith is one of wrestling with God.  It usually happens in situations like where Jacob finds himself.  Finally ready to seek forgiveness and hopefully reconciliation from his brother Esau, whom he stole the birthright right from under his nose.  We wrestle with our past and we wrestle with our possible future.

We wrestle with God when we try and reconcile what we know to be true with our current reality, because life doesn’t always match up.

People of faith don’t have all the answers.  You might say that we have a lot of the questions and we actively wrestle with what we read in our Bibles and how our community of faith seeks to faithfully respond to the needs that are all around us.
That is one of the things I love best about my congregation and its wider denomination.  We welcome the questions, we welcome the doubts, we welcome the wrestling.  Please don’t check your mind when you come through our doors.  Active faith is challenging and is well worth it!

Prayer:  God help me to navigate my life in a way that honors you.  Amen.
