Waiting on God 3

This week I am exploring passages of scripture that deal with the topic of waiting on God.  The early disciples waited from the day of Jesus’ ascension into heaven for God’s Spirit and direction to come to them on the day of Pentecost.

Daily reading: James 5:7-8
May 20, 2015

Focus scripture: Therefore, brothers and sisters, you must be patient as you wait for the coming of the Lord.  Consider the farmer who waits patiently for the coming of rain in the fall and spring, looking forward to the precious fruit of the earth.  James 5:7-8

James reminds us that we are called to wait.  The image of the farmer waiting gives us insight into what kind of waiting we are to do.  It’s not the patient waiting for the doctor to come into the room and diagnose whatever is ailing you.  No that is passive waiting and often isn’t very fruitful.  Farmers have done great work in their patient waiting.  They have turned over the earth and have planted seeds.  They have pulled weeds and amended the soil with rich nutrients.  Now they wait expectantly for the rain to come and the crops to rise and fruits to grow.

We are to do the hard work of preparing ourselves for God’s direction in our lives.  This comes by daily reading of scripture, prayer, community bible study and coming together weekly for worship.

Prayer:  God I desire to be led by you today, help me to see how I can follow.  Amen.
