Now is the Time!

Scripture: Mark 1:14-20

“Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom!  Change your hearts and lives and trust this good news!” Mark 1:15

Jesus begins his ministry with these words, “now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom!  Change your hearts and lives and trust this good news!”

It is a message of hope and excitement.  (Check out all of the exclamation marks!)

God’s kingdom is coming, Jesus says and the way we are to prepare for it is to change our hearts and lives. In other translations we read “repent, and believe in the good news.”  Repent means to turn toward God.  It means to change your attitude, outlook and choices so that you can follow.  It means saying good bye to a life centered upon you and one centered upon Christ.

Now repent might not be a word that you would want to put an exclamation mark by.  After all repenting means we have to own up to the wrongs we have done.  It means we have to name and claim the systems we participate in that bring about pain and destruction to others lives.  But it also means that we are free from the wrongs of our past.  Owning up to our mistakes and consciously choosing to behave differently is freeing.  Knowing that our past wrongs do not dictate how we will behave today is really good news!

Prayer:  God help me to name and claim the ways that I have harmed others with my words and actions.  Help me to center upon Christ in all that I do and say.  Amen.
