Staying True

Staying True.  By Brett Heimer
Scripture: Luke 22: 54-69
“Then a maid, seeing him as he sat in the light and gazing at him, said, ‘This man also was with him.’ But he denied it saying, ‘Woman, I do not know him’.” Luke 22: 56-57

During our Advent season we not only talk about the birth of Christ but many of the stories that transpired throughout his life. Our scripture today speaks of Peter when he disowns Jesus. Jesus had predicted that Peter would disown him three times before the rooster crowed. Peter did just that.
As we go through life, we have many chances to express our commitment to the right thing, but sometimes fall short. Why is that? Are we scared, embarrassed, not confident, or just not committed to our cause?  What was Peter’s reason for disowning Jesus? In some cases we may not want to take the time to follow through on what we know is the right thing (Christian thing) to do. In some instances we may say “Oh let the next person deal with it.” Who is going to make it right?
At First Christian Church, many of our actions show our commitment to the neighborhood and world around us.  Our church has not used the quote “Oh let the next person deal with it.” Our church members help our community with programs like the community garden, food and supplies to students around the city and the coffee, beans and rice program to help people in another country. We stand for what we believe in, and help others in the world around us.
Prayer:  Dear Lord, during this advent season, help us to be true to you and what you stand for. Please remind us that we must stand up for what is right and help those people around us so we may make their lives better. In Jesus Name,  Amen.
