Passing It On

Passing It On. By Carol Walters
Scripture: Isaiah 59: 15b-21
“And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD: my spirit which is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your children, or out of the mouth of your children’s children, says the LORD, from this time forth and for evermore.” Isaiah 59:21
It is a wonderful experience to receive positive feedback about your child or someone else you care about or even someone you supervise. Anyone who has tried knows that passing on good manners, good behavior or good work habits can be a challenging task. It is an imperfect process of guidance, discipline, modeling and reinforcement. And though the process sometimes goes awry and doesn’t produce the hoped for result, any departure is usually only temporary. Good teaching, consistently practiced, almost always achieves the desired outcome.
Today’s scripture is God’s promise that those who have his spirit and speak about him will pass the same on to their children and through them to their children down through the generations. How comforting it is to know that God intends to have an ongoing relationship with the world. Our role is to be faithful in our belief and to follow the example of the Christ child who was sent to us by God and comes anew in to our hearts each Advent season. Then, after receiving Him, we should pass it on.
For me, lyrics from the song, “Pass It On”, summarize the process quite well:
It only takes a spark to get a fire going
And soon all those around can warm up to its glowing
That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it
You spread his love to everyone; you want to pass it on
This Advent, whether you are inviting Jesus in to your heart for the first time or for the one-hundredth, pass his love to others and encourage them to “keep it going” to their children and their children’s children forever and ever.
Prayer: Oh, God, as you promised to send your Spirit to all who believe and follow you, we promise to receive your son, Jesus in to our hearts and share his love with others from this time forth and for evermore. Amen.
